Mission
Participation|Art is dedicated to showing youth art that is socially- aware and participatory. Projects are initiated by both youth and adults and take advantage of the internet’s ability to facilitate collaborations and connect people globally.
History
Participation|Art was founded in 2007 by Stacey Goodman (you can view his work at his site Memory Drum), an artist and teacher who lives in Oakland, California. In his effort to expand what he playfully refers to as his “classroom practice” and give his students a more meaningful way to be in the world through art, Stacey began to reach out to other artists, teachers, studio artists and non-profits. He is always looking for more collaborators, so please do not hesitate to contact him if you are interested in getting involved.
Organizing Principle
Participation|Art will operate as a collaborative and remain organizationally and institutionally “light”, existing not as a non-profit nor for-profit for as long as it makes sense to do so.
Educational Goals
Participation|Art will serve as a venue for educators to share work and projects created by their students. Teachers will also be encouraged to work support teachers who wish to share ideas and explore the extents that young people can be introduced to and involved in the highest order of critical dialogs around contemporary art
Technology
Participation|Art will serve as an incubator for experimenting with existing collaborative and networking technologies. Paricipation|Art will work with corporations who wish to test new technologies in exchange for allowing the young artists to offer innovative ways to use new tools.
